Following Dan Cathy’s (president of Chick-Fil-A) remarks regarding the Biblical ideal for marriage and family, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel stated his opposition to Chick-Fil-A placing a restaurant in the city of Chicago. He said,
Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values. They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty.
The intolerance of those who trumpet the values of tolerance is nearly maddening. The very ones who often preach the necessity of living in harmony with the views of others are the very ones who are most inharmonious toward those with opposite views. But this is nothing new and indeed is in perfect accord with the sinful nature of man. Sinners always condemn others as being “judgmental” when they are confronted with the truth. I remember the words of the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19:9 when Lot (a resident himself) tried to dissuade the men of that city from their homosexual lusts,
This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.
Lot, certainly not a conservative standard bearer by any stretch, tried to discourage the men in the midst of their raging lusts to instead satisfy their lusts in another way. And the moment he even hinted that they should not be able to gratify their sexual hankering, all of their rage is turned to him. Why? Because, as we read earlier in Genesis 19:7 he begged them “do not act so wickedly”. How dare he! They cannot stand anyone who would suggest that their way of life is less than ideal, not to mention wicked! So they immediately denounce him as a self-appointed judge and decide that he should not only be berated but that he should be the recipient of their evil intentions.
The similarities that the Chick-Fil-A incident bears with the what takes place here in Genesis 19 is intriguing. Today, the Biblical standard is condemned as hate speech and those who subscribe to the Biblical ideal are denounced as “judgmental”. Furthermore, they are targeted as enemies of the state and society in general.
