Lots of work to do tonight but, like many others, I am watching the election returns. The race has already been called, some think way too early, and it’s been announced that Barack Hussein Obama has been reelected President of the United States of America. I continue to watch, partly in disgust and partly with reserved acceptance. I am just stunned that an apparent majority (although the popular vote tally remains to be seen) of those who voted in this year’s presidential election voted in favor of an historically tragic and civically debilitating ideology. President Obama’s platform of repackaged socialism has always brought the ultimate death of a civilization–it has never spawned hope. He governs with an outright disregard for biblical morality. His favor for the public parading of moral perversion sets the stage for the continued demise of America.
Yet, while I remain stunned at the evident political and practical ignorance of the electorate, the Spirit of the Living God points me to His Word for answers and instruction. There are at least three truths that will help to anchor my sou
Every vote cast “in His name” counts in His eyes.
Given the turn of this election, I might be tempted to think that my vote was wasted. Why even bother anymore? I’ve thought this very recently. But I am reminded of the absolute way in which I ignore the Presence of our God when I think like this.
You see, I am a one-issue voter and I am such with a vigor and passion. The single most important issue of our time is the issue of the sanctity of human life (i.e. abortion). Now, of course, there are many other issues of importance but this one stands above all. If we miss this it doesn’t matter what other issues we have “right”. Life is the most crucial issue of human existence. The unbiblical taking of life trumps every other issue on the scale of importance.
For the past quarter of a century, America has looked favorably on the “right” of doctors, mommies, and daddies, to kill unborn children. And in every election cycle it is my sole purpose to cast a vote for every pro-life, anti-Roe-v-Wade candidate possible. I will not knowingly vote for a pro-abortion or spineless “pro-life” candidate.
Open your mouth for the mute,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
defend the rights of the poor and needy.
(Proverbs 31:8-9 ESV)
I have faithfully voted in every election (except one primary) for the past 22 years. However, the legal right of abortion is more entrenched in our society than ever before. But my vote is, as it were, a “cup of cold water” given in the name of Christ (cf. Matthew 10:42) for the sake of the glory of Christ. And I believe that this is not in vain…He will not forget.
God appointed, We elected
I love the biblical truth of Divine Sovereignty. That doctrine states that God is in absolute control of all things at all times and that He is never surprised by anything. Somehow, in the counsel and wisdom of God, He works His will through the work and decisions of men and that includes votes within a democracy. So, I cast my vote and God appointed His chosen leader for His own purposes.
- He rules over all kings (“the ruler of kings on earth”, Rev. 1:5)
- He anoints, appoints, and ordains leaders and nations
He changes times and seasons;
he removes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those who have understanding;
(Daniel 2:21 ESV)
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
(Romans 13:1 ESV)

The Church is Given a Specific Responsibility in Regards to Earthly Rulers
I am instructed to respect earthly rulers (Rom. 13:7); pray for earthly leaders (2 Tim. 2:1-5); give thanks to God for earthly leaders (1 Tim. 2:1); and honor earthly leaders (1 Peter 2:17).
How to respect them?
I respect them with kindness, esteeming their position,
I pray for them by…
Praying for the gracious and undeserved blessing of God on America. Praying that they would govern with morality (Rom. 13:3)
I can give thanks for…
God’s control over all things…He is not taken by surprise by anything!
I honor earthly rulers by…
Obeying earthly laws insofar as God’s laws are not violated.
