I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice…from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 1:5; 3:15).

I’m thinking today about my mom. We’re celebrating the day she was born. A few years ago I tried to write a tribute to my dad and today I thought I’d do something similar for my mom.

As I sit here today and take time to thank the Lord for my mom, there are ten things that top the list. I want to list them here as an encouragement for her as well as an example to the hundreds of mothers that I know in hopes that you’ll follow her example. So, here it goes…

Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

My mom has come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. What more can I say? She didn’t “get religion” but she trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. That is the greatest legacy and most soul-satisfying joy for me and for the entire family.

Humility and willingness to Repent

I don’t remember all of the details but I know that you didn’t always follow Christ and certainly not perfectly when you did. But you were humble enough to repent. I can look back over the past so many years and see very evident spiritual growth. Mom, you’ve grown spiritually and your willingness and humility to repent and seek to follow Christ is a lasting legacy that causes me to give thanks.

A Life of Selfless Service

Everyone who knows you knows that you genuinely enjoy serving others. Whether you’re making meals or serving someone in need, offering an open and hospitable home, cleaning, serving others with needs are just a few things that come to my mind. Even when you’re not feeling well or hurting you selflessly serve.

A Love for the Local Church

I love the local church largely because of you. You are always serving and always participating. I probably have preached to you and dad as much as or more than any other human being. The fact that you have stayed so long and served so diligently is just a testament to grace.

An Unfailing Love for My Dad

Other than your love for Christ, I would say your love for my dad tops the list. You serve him, care for him, protect him, and honor him. Everyone else sees it and knows it well and perhaps I see it more than anyone.

A Wisdom in Dealing with a Often Difficult Son

That’s me. I am thinking mostly of how you parented me with wisdom as I set out on my own. As my children have grown I now realize exactly how difficult it is to know when to speak up and when to keep quiet. One of the things that I am most appreciative of is that you have done this just about perfectly. I often make poor decisions and tend to act before I think and yet you have been a stalwart of patience and perseverance with me.

A Legacy of Family Vacations

When we were young you worked and even today you work…and I think about the only reason you do so is because you treasure our time together on family vacations. Whether it was that “really nice” motel in Lynchburg, VA when we were young or that place with the “shared” bathrooms in Ocean City or the beautiful multi-floored 10-bedroom places that we enjoy going away together…Joanie and I love it and my kids all treasure that time.

Becoming One of My Wife’s Best Friends

You’ve become one of my wife’s best friends. You welcomed her with open arms into our family and have made her part of the family. She loves you and the fact that you talk everyday and multiple times a day is just one example. She genuinely enjoys spending time with you and cherishes that friendship.

A Love for My Kids

I have no idea what it’s like to be a grandparent, but I have to say that I am looking forward to it because I have seen how much joy you have around your grandkids. The kids love you more than they love themselves and they absolutely treasure and adore you…and watching you do the same for them brings joy to my heart.

A Life of Prayer and Trust in the Lord

We all worry and have points of anxiety and I’m sure you do to. However, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard you say “Well, we’ll just trust the Lord…” or “I’ve been praying about that”. When I said earlier that you have grown in your love for Christ this is something that stands out.

I love you mom and am rejoicing in the Lord’s good gift of a godly mom. Happy Birthday.
